Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey have prepared a draft trilateral defence agreement after nearly a year of talks. Defence Production Minister Raza Hayat Harraj confirmed the development in an interview with Reuters on Wednesday. He said the deal aims to strengthen regional security amid rising tensions in the last two years. The draft is already shared among the three countries, with discussions ongoing. A final consensus is needed to complete the agreement.

Harraj clarified that the trilateral pact is separate from the bilateral Saudi-Pakistani defence accord signed last year. He emphasized that the draft has been in preparation for the past 10 months. Each country is reviewing the document and deliberating over its provisions. The agreement seeks to provide a coordinated defence mechanism among the three regional powers. It could serve as a deterrent against external aggression or regional instability.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan addressed the matter during a press conference in Istanbul on Thursday. He confirmed that talks had occurred but no agreement has yet been signed. Fidan emphasized the need for broader regional cooperation and mutual trust to prevent conflicts and external interference. He noted that security challenges arise when countries distrust each other, creating cracks that external powers exploit.

Fidan added that President Tayyip Erdogan envisions an inclusive platform for wider cooperation and stability in the region. While he did not directly name Pakistan or Saudi Arabia, his remarks underscored Turkey’s interest in regional security collaboration. Discussions are ongoing, and Fidan suggested that relevant countries must be confident in each other for a successful security platform. The trilateral talks complement Turkey’s push to join the existing Saudi-Pakistan defence pact.

According to Bloomberg, Türkiye sought entry into the bilateral Saudi-Pakistan defence agreement signed in September. The draft pact reportedly mirrors NATO’s Article 5, stating that any aggression against one member is treated as an attack on all. Sources indicated that the discussions had reached an advanced stage, with a deal considered very likely. If finalized, the agreement would strengthen collective defence and deter potential threats in the region.
